This is a true story about a woman whose husband-to-be decided not to marry her vitually at the last minute. The author, Ms. Kennedy, is an Atlanta TV celebrity who gained nationwide attention from her devestating rejecction at the alter. (Being an Atlanta celebrity made it impossible to keep secret, which even worsened the emotions of rejection and embarassment she felt.) The author writes her story and her account of how she recovered from such a devestating rejection to help other women - any woman who has experienced any level of rejection. A second title within the main title, "My Story of Hope and Healing For Every Woman Who has Felt the Heartbreak of Rejection" aptly describes the book.
The author describes not only the devestation she went through, but also how she recovered through her relationship with God. The author is honest about her emotions, even blaming God instead of her fiancee, for being left at the alter. Bible verses and stories of women in the Bible complement her insight on recovery from rejection.
The book is what I would consider a light read - easy to read and containing humor. The author has practical and helpful advice for women in all stages of a relationship with a man. I like the author's writing style, which speaks to you personally.
This is a practical book and one that extends healing to all women. A must for every woman's book shelf! Rejection hurts and the author has a biblically sound way to deal with rejection AND demonstrates how you can improve your relationship with God.

While The World Watched by Carolyn Maull McKinstry with Denise George
This is a nonfiction book about growing up in the midst of the Civil Rights Era. Moreover, it's a very personal account of the injustice and violence that occurred to Blacks, as they were struggling for equal rights some one hundred years after the President Lincoln delcared them free. This is the personal account of a woman who when a child, was in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church when a bomb went off, in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963.
The author describes the sorrow and pain of being in a near death situation and losing four of her friends in the bomb that exploded in her church. The author's world was turned upside down, as her church was a place of saftety and sanctuary for her. Now, she realized there was no safe haven. The author describes how it was normal for bombs to go off in black neighborhoods, but in the church?! The author openly describes her feelings and life that changed forever after her church was bombed, in 1963.
The author describes the Jim Crow laws, the inequality between whites and blacks and the struggle for Civil Rights. Having participated in a March that was organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the author has front line experience that reveals just what it was like to be black in Birmingham, Alabama, and the entire South. The struggle for desegregation in public schools is also described. Definitley, a sad time for our country.
The author includes exerpts of speeches that describe the values taught by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as Preident John F. Kennedy's determination to change our country so that all, regardless of race, are truly equal. This book is a personal and candid exploration of the Civil Rights movement. It is not simply a historical account, which makes the book truly unique.
I highly recommend this book for everyone and I believe it should be required reading for all high school students.
Tyndale House Publishers sent me a complimentary copy of this book for me to review. This in no way influenced my review.

Life, In Spite of Me by Kristen Jane Anderson with Tricia Goyer
An invaluable book about depression and suicide. The author details her fall into depression and her attempted suicide - a suicide that should have been successful. God had plans for the author and the author is honest about her struggle to overcome depression and the life altering injuries she suffered from her attempted suicide. The author also takes you on her personal journey of becoming a Christian and truly living her life for God.
If you are suffering from depression, this book can give you an abundance of hope. The author addresses the reader with things she wished people would have told her while she was suffering... this makes it also invaluable for those who want to help someone suffering from depression, as well.
This book is not only inspiring, but it confirms God has a plan for each of us. God truly cares of about every detail of our life! I won't give it away, but if you read this book, you will see evidence that God is present in our lives, even if we do not feel His presence. Evidence that God is watching over you every minunte of your life - God is with you! God is not some abstract God who is not apart of your life. Yes, you will find evidence of this in this book and that is so overwhelmingly comforting!
The author also provides information on the ministry God called her for - to provide support to those suffering from depression. There are people who care and want to help - no one has to go through it alone. I highly recommend this book.

Same Life, New Story by Jan Silvious
This book is about changing your life. Not a self-help book, per se, but rather a life coaching book that encourages one to put the past behind and start anew. The author uses women from the Bible as examples, as well as today's women. By using book writing - chapters, etc. as a metaphor, the reader is able to visualize how to make real life change. This is a ten week Bible study with questions of personal reflection, as well as group discussion questions.
This book is does not focus on overcoming the pain of the past, but rather ackowledges the process and encourages you to let go and move on. God is the ultimate author of your life, but you also have some control. Ultimately, you can remain complacent and stuck, or start a new "chapter" and live the life of joy that God wants for you. There is a lot of insight and new perspectives to be gained by reading this book. For exmaple:
Every life has themes (and do you have a recurring negative theme you need to change?)
Get unstuck from the belief system that can hold you up
Change your attitude, such as from I can't to I can; and, bad things happen in life, but you do not have to let them define you.
What-might-have-beens do not exist, so don't even waste your time thinking about it!
How to move on? you need to combine wisdom and courage
Honestly, I did not like the first chapter, but it gains much momentum from Chapter 2 through the last chapter. I recommend this book, but with the knowledge that it is more of a life coaching approach than providing insight on how to deal with the pain from the past in order to move on. The author glosses over the painful process of dealing with painful life circumstantces, which tends to over simplify the process of starting anew. Yet again, I do not believe it was the author's intention to take the reader through a deep, psychological process, but rather encourage readers that it is possible to change your life!

The Power Based Life by Mike Flynt
This book falls in the category of self help. It covers many ways to improve every aspect of your life. It is also based on Biblical principles, citing supporting verses from the Bible.
Dr. Phil, watch out! Mike Flynt has put together a different type of self help book - one that not only encourages, but cheers you on! The authors uses metaphors and real life examples, not only his own, but of famous people. This by far is not the typical self help book and I believe it is better! Much better.
I had a hard time putting it down. It all made so much sense and is so easy to grasp the various concepts. The author also makes it seem like a piece of cake to implement changes in your life, which is encouraging.
The chapters are:
1. Power Base: Play to your Strengths
2. Basics: Master the Essentials
3. Mindscape: Cultivate a Winning Attitude
4. Visualization: See What Can Be
5. Belief: Defy the Skeptics
6. Commitment: Move Forward Relentlessly
7. Team: Know Who You Play For
8. Identification: Fly Your Flag
9. Adversity: Turn Your Difficulties to Your Advantage
10. Compassion: Practice Radical Mercy
11. Time: Maximize Your Moments
12. Body: Sow in Health, Reap longer life
The author writes the book as if it were a Pep Rally! It can't get any more encouraging and motivating! This is by far the best self help book I have read. Anyone can benefit from this book - even if you don't think you need to make any self improvements, you will find this book highly useful and enlightening! I highly recommend it to EVERYONE!

Gray Matter by David Levy, MD with Joel Kilpatrick
This book is an inpiring account of how a highly specialized surgeon began praying with his patients. This was unheard of in the medical community, and the author shares his concerns of what others would think if they knew he prayed with his patients. The author is open and honest as he shares the struggles he encountered in his decision to pray with patients and the outcomes of his decisions to pray with his patients.
The author is authentic as he does not pull any punches with his spiritual journey to know Jesus and praying with patients. The author is brutally honest with his concerns, mistakes, and struggle to pray with his patients as he feared what others would think, especially those in the medical profession. Would he ruin his reputation? Would his patients begin to doubt his abilities, if he asked to pray with them? The author put his career on the line when he began praying with patients. Why? Why risk so much? The author literally takes you through the power of prayer. Yet, the author goes even further. The author ultimately focuses on the spiritual health as well as the physical health of his patients. Again, something unheard of in the medical community. The author's courage is truly inspiring.
In addition to the author's journey in praying with patients, the book also reads as a suspense novel. The author provides true accounts of dangerous brain surgeries, as a neurosurgeon, and describes the stress of complications and not knowing if the patient will be the same afterwards. Will the patient have a stroke, lose precious memories, or even die? Or, will the surgery be a complete success? Facsinating accounts of the intricate nature of brain surgery balances the book, making it highly readable.
I highly recommend this book. Not only is it a good read, but also for inspiration to truly live your life for God. What happened when someone truly lays everything down for God?

On This Day in Christian History by Robert J. Morgan
This book is a daily reader full of inspiring true stories. A verse from the Bible is included to meditate on. The book is all about Saints, martyrs and heroes and each day gives a glimpse into Christian history.
The book is not only laid out by dates, but has a topical index. The topical index is a great help when looking for a particular subject. The topical index not only includes inspirational topics, but practical topics as well, such as Parenting or Time Management.
Each day has a short reading, which can leave you wanting more information. In that respect, it's a great book to begin research on many topics in Christian history. This book is highly useful and easy to read.
I would recommend this book for anyone looking for encouragement to pastors seeking material to preach from. I think it is a great resource for daily inspiration, as well as a starting point for research and sermons. The topical index makes the book even more valuable and helpful.
