Where Will You Go from Here? by Valorie Burton

An excellent self-coaching book! No matter what your setback is, you will find this book empowering, enlightening, and encouraging. You may have lost your job; you may have gotten divorced; you may have had a tragic accident - to say this book is useful for any setback is an understatement.

This is a thorough book, which includes how to catch negative thinking; how to recognize how your emotions factor, how to figure out your next move; and much more. The author includes wisdom from psychologists, as well as the Bible. Each chapter ends with a prayer that is devoted to the topic of the chapter. Even more, the author is not condescending, and is realistic and encourages the reader to remain realistic and flexible with goals.

This is not a book that simply addresses feel good Bible verses. This is truly a highly useful book to get your life back on track, no matter what your setback is. The author starts the book with 5 key commitments you need to make to yourself to start you on the road to recovery. Here are the commitments, which are explained and in the very first chapter:

1. I will not feel sorry for myself.
2. I will not stare at the closed door.
3. I will dig deep to unearth the courage I need.
4. I will direct my thoughts - my thoughts will not direct me.
5. I will choose to believe that all things work together for good.

Using real life examples from the author's life, as well as others she has coached, this book is fantastic. The author is very realistic as to how you will most likely feel during the process of your comeback - such as, why don't I feel better, now? I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. This in no way influenced my review.

The Little Book of Wisdom by Mark DeMoss

A short read on a variety of principles that will make for a better life. The author has divided the book into two sections: Wisdom For Your Professional Life and Wisdom For Your Personal Life. Overall, you certainly will get something useful - maybe a different perspective of how to handle situations or best seek out advice, but I was a bit disappointed in the book. For the most part, take what you like and leave the rest - and you will get a lot out of this book.

From topics like getting your priorities in order, finding and maintaining your focus on life, learning the importance of listening, to advice on little ways that flatter and positively influence people (such as the lost art of letter writing - not email) this book has bits of wisdom from all over the spectrum. Of course, topics you may expect like honesty and integrity are also covered.

Personally, I had issue with the his handling of the topic: "The Best Defense... Is a Good Defense: Why I Won't Ride Alone with Another Woman". It was certainly written from a man's perspective which makes me wonder who is the intended target audience of the book. Was it really written for men?

The book has good points, but much of it is really expounding on the art of common sense. I wasn't really impressed by the book, though I must admit the one topic mentioned above has soured my view of the book. I would somewhat recommend this book, yes, you can learn something from it. Women may want to skip his topic of Why I Won't Ride Alone with Another Woman. I intend on writing the author on what comes across as his negative and generalized view of women.

The Quotable Roque, Edited by Matt Lewis

The secondary title is descriptive for this nonfiction book: "The Ideals of Sarah Palin in Her Own Words". As the main title suggests, this is a book of quotes from Sarah Palin. Quotes taken from the campaign trail, interviews, Palin's facebook page, etc.

Topis include: Aborotion, Real America, Living in Alaska, the Goodness of Americans, Barack Obama, Being Governor of Alaska, Being Sarah, Foriegn Policy, Crime, Faith, Taxes, etc. This book is a short read, for obvious reasons. This is strictly a "pro Sarah Palin" book that only uses quotes, or even part of quotes, that put Palin in a favorable light. The media -or "elite media" has been accused of taking statements Palin made out of context. This book is more of the same.

I have an idea. This book claims to be Sarah Palin "in her own words". Instead of reading bits of quotes from this book, such as from the Katie Couric interviews, why not watch the entire Couric interview - it can still be found on the internet. Not only would you hear Palin speak in her own words (All OF THEM), but you can also evaluate her by her body language and demeanor.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. It does little to give an accurate account of Palin's quotes - just being edits from interviews and speeches that show Palin only in a favorable light. In fact, to even suggest this book is a book of "quotes", implying a book of great quotes, is ridiculous and certainly misleading.

Hell, Rob Bell, and What Happens When People Die by Bobby Conway

Applause! Applause! Applause!!!! Bobby Conway does an excellent job proving Rob Bell's recent best seller, "Love Wins" is nothing more than unbiblical wishful thinking. Bobby Conway completely resolves questions regarding hell and what happens when people die, as well. Backed with Biblical references, Bobby Conway demonstrates the false hope that Rob Bell has spewed in "Love Wins".

Many people are being deceived and mislead by Rob Bell and others like him who water down the Gospels. This is a must read for anyone who truly wants to follow Christ and the Great Commission and challenge those who have false beliefs about hell and what Christianity is really about. The Emergent Church must be challenged and exposed for the false hopes and beliefs it promotes.

"Hell, Rob Bell and What Happens When People Die" not only challenges and exposes Rob Bell for his unbiblical views that promote false hope, but can also be a resource to expose other authors who, unfortunately, have gained a lot of ground in spewing unbiblical theology and false hope. For example, this book can show how the best seller, "The Shack" is perversed, misguded and simply false.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is a must read that is short and to the point. No fluff in this book- only the Gospel truth!

I received this ebook for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. This in no way influenced my review.

40 Days Without Food: Divine Goodness to a Starving Soul by Russ Masterson

This is basically a diary of a man's journey to fast for 40 days. Honestly, I felt the first three quarters of the book was dominated by negativity. I kept thinking, "they always say, if you do not give joyfully, then don't give at all". Masterson's constant complaining about not wanting to do the fast he felt God called him to do overshadowed bits of wisdom he wrote about from the Bible and from others. It was hard to do, but I managed to finish the book.

I did not like the book for a variety of reasons. First, as I explained above, the first three quarters were dominated with negativity to the point I felt the author was literally whining about doing a fast he did not want to do. The end of the book discusses fasting. It would have been better had he taken the postitive attitude he conveyed when he discussed fasting and Chrisitianity.

Second, the book seems to convey that if you fast for 40 days all of your hearts desires will be fulfilled. The author got his dream job; fabulous vacationing; apparently the money and means to do whatever he wanted. I don't know if the author believes he was rewarded by God this way for his fasting, but the author does not address this in his discussion about fasting and Christianity.

I would not recommend this book. Tyndale House Publishers provided a complimentary copy of this ebook for me to review. This in no way influenced my review.

Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero by Michael Hingson and Susy Flory

The true and phenominal story of Michael Hingson's experience escaping the World Trade Center as the World Trade Center was destroyed by terrorists on 9/11. Moreover, Hingson has incorporated his life stories, as it was certainly "flashing before his eyes" while he escaped, wondering if he would make it out alive. Mr. Hingson is a truly fascinating, talented and determined man. Born blind, Hingson explains how he grew up without feeling disabled. This book is not only a first hand account of 9/11, but of living blind without being limited or defined as disabled. Very inspirational.

The writing style makes you feel as if you are there during the 9/11 events. This has become one of my favorite books for a variety of reasons. Mr. Hingson has his own quote at the beginning of the last chapter, "God does not present insurmountable problems. Instead, he give us challenges, waits for us to overcome them, and then rejoices." This quote goes a long way in describing this fantastic book. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Not only for those who would like to know what it was like to be in the midst of 9/11, but for everyone who experiences challenges in life - challenges that can become discouraging. This book is inspiring and shows courage and determination to defy being labeled as disabled. My gosh, he actually taught himself to ride a bicycle!!! and much more!!! I've never read anything that really demonstrated how you can overcome anything!

Rumors of God by Darren Whitehead & Jon Tyson

A well thought out book on how Christianity should be. The United States is rapidly becoming nonreligious. Can we change that? This book addresses a myriad of issues that plaque the Church and Christians. If only we all read an implemented the ideals from this insightful book. In today's age, the authors' accurately note that Christians are thought of as judgemental. Is Christianity supposed to be judgemental? No. What happened to grace, and even more, what is grace? What is forgiveness? These concepts and much more is addressed and explored.

Through real life examples and Scripture, the authors present a picture of what Church and community should really be like. Unfortunately, it seems to only be "rumors" here in the United States. This book has the potential to change that and I certainly hope this book becomes a national best seller.

I like the book because it offers great insight and hope for a better United States that can be easily recognized as Christian. Recognized for what God wants us to be. It also includes a study guide that covers each of the chapters. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Churches should utilize the book and study guide in their congregations.

Why God Won't Go Away by Alister McGrath

The subtitle to this book is more descriptive of what it is about: "Is the New Atheism Running on Empty?" I had never heard of the New Atheism. The author does an excellent job explaining what the New Atheism is and even compares it to atheism. The author analyzes New Atheism and reveals its flaws. This is not a book that debates Christianity versus New Atheism, but it does provide a Christian with solid foundation to confront New Atheism.

Yet, the author also explores the rise and what appears to be the pending fall of New Atheism. It appears that it will be a short lived movement that, in my opinion, simply spews hate at all religions. As the book reveals, New Atheism is an embarrassment to atheism and simply ridicules religion and is also mean spirited. New Atheism seems to base it's reasoning simply on insults. New Atheism will most likely come to an end in the near future. The author has thoroughly researched New Atheism and has notes to original sources to back up quotes and conclusions.

Even so, this book can also create a foundation to refute atheism, too. It's a valuable source for Christians who confront atheists. The author covers arguments that form the basis of atheism, such as scientific proof. I hadn't put a lot of thought into scientific proof before I read this book, but the author is right on point as to how much science has really proved. (Not a lot - mostly relying on theories.) I recommend this book to anyone who confronts atheism, especially those who confront the New Athiesm. The author included an incident that really shows that God is involved and can use everything for His purpose. A person who had read a book on New Atheism was so appalled that he felt compelled to explore Chrisitianity. The person said he never would have considered Christianity if it wasn't for the book because the book was so one-sided. The result? He became a Christian.

Love At Last Sight by Kerry & Chris Shook

This is an incredibly valuable book to strengthen and deepen all relationships in your life. Whether it's your spouse, family or friends - this book has the answers to creating long lasting and meaningful relationships. The second title, "30 days to grow and deepen your closet relationships" is right on target. I wish everyone would read this book and apply the principles the authors teach. The world would be a much better place.

This book is organized into four categories, corresponding with four weeks in a month. I suggest not rushing through it and taking the full thirty days to absorb the valuable information that can make all of your relationships so much more meaningful and fulfilling.

Week 1 is titled, "The Art of Being All There"
Daily readings discuss how to be all there: in the moment; on a deeper level; during conflict; no matter what; in tough times; and, before it's too late.

Week 2 is titled, "The Art of Acting Intentionally"
Daily readings discuss how to act intentionally: thinking ahead; stepping out; creating space; going beyond surface issues; getting unstuck; and, giving encouragement.

Week 3 is titled, "The Art of Risking Awkwardnesss"
Daily readings discuss how to risking awkwardness: of asking; of revealing your heart; of putting actions before feelings; of expressing anger; of making changes; and, of unity.

Week 4 is titled, "The Art of Letting Go"
Daily readings discuss how to let go: of hurt; of insecurity; of pride; of guilt; of selfishness; of unrealistic expectations; and, of shadows.

From real life examples and examples taken from the Bible, the authors clearly illustrate all of these principles. This is a must read for EVERYONE. I sincerely believe the world would be much better place - not to mention so much improvement in everyones' life, if everyone would read this book. Easy to read and understand, this is the book of the year!

Jesus, My Father, The CIA and Me A memoir of sorts by Ian Morgan Cron

How I can relate to the author's experience of his early church memories and his father. The author recounts his life from early childhood to adulthood, married with children of his own. Very open and honest, the author describes deep feelings of not belonging and wanting to fit in with his peers. The stunts he pulled to try to accomplish this. Moreover, the author details his relationship with his father as he grew up. It was not a good relationship and the author is brutally honest. I won't spoil it, but anyone who grew up in an alcoholic home can easily relate. I won't even hint at where the CIA comes in - you must read this passionate book.

The author doesn't pull any punches, either, as he describes the self-destructive ways he used to try to cope with his heartbreaking relationship with his father. The author honestly reveals his journey from childhood to adulthood and includes the good and the bad. More imoortantly, the author demonstrates how he regained his lost belief in Jesus.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially anyone who grew up in alcoholism. It's truly a great read. The author uses a lot of humor, which compelled my interest.

Third Day Make Your Move Concert

I attended the May 5, 2011 Louisville, KY concert. Opening act, Tenth Avenue, was very good. I was impressed as they performed very well. No comparison, however, to the Third Day concert. Yes, I am a bit biased, being a huge Third Day fan - even a Gomer! Third Day sung a great selection of songs while focusing on their current release, "Move". I recommend a Third Day concert for everyone - it's simply the best! I also believe it would be a great opportunity to take non-Christian friends to witness and have a great time! I've seen Third Day five or six times and I have never been disappointed. Third Day truly puts on an outstanding concert! Love Mac Powell's moments of prayer - really feel even more connected to God! Out of five stars, Third Day Concerts rate ten stars!

Check out Thirdday.com for free live concert streaming! Still it doesn't quite compare to the experience of actually being at a Third Day concert!

Growing Up Amish, A memoir, by Ira Wagler

Have you ever wondered what Amish life is like? Have you ever wondered if Amish teenagers ever rebel? Can an Amish person leave the Amish life, and if so, what are the consequences? All of this and more is answered as Ira Wagler recounts his life story - growing up Amish.

Wagler's story is moving as he starts from early childhood and continues into his teenage years as he struggled, rebelled and left the Amish only to return a number of times. It's story of finding one's place in the world and the assurance of salvation in Jesus Christ. Wagler details his stuggles being torn between the world and the Amish belief that you must be Amish or you will be condemned to eternal hell.

It took Wagler ten years to find the peace he was so desperately searching for, while feeling "Confused. Half-scared. Trapped. Resigned. And, deep down desperately lost." Wagler recounts his decision to become a member of the Amish church; his regret; his excommunication; and his decision to return to the Amish church and have his excommunication lifted. Wagler discusses how his actions affected his family as well as the hardships he faced the times he left his family and the Amish. Yet, would Wagler remain Amish? You must read this book and find out. It is a great read and I highly recommend it. Every young person struggles with what road to take and their future. This memoir emphasizes such struggles in a unique way as Wagler struggles with being Amish. I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially young people.

Put Your Dream to the Test by John C. Maxwell

This is a nonfiction book that helps the reader identify and realize his/her dreams. The secondary title is more descriptive: 10 Questions to Help You See It and Seize it. All of us have dreams, but how many of us are able to achieve our dreams or even goals? This book is a highly valuable tool with excellent advice for achieving your dreams. All aspects are covered, such as whose dream is it? Is it really your dream or your parents', for example.

The book is broken into ten chapters, each very enlightening. Chapter 1 - The Ownership Question (Is my dream really my dream?); Chapter 2 - The Clarity Question (Do I clearly see my dream?); Chapter 3 - The Reality Question (Am I depending on factors within my control to achieve my dream?); Chapter 4 - The Passion Question (Does my dream compel me to follow it?); Chapter 5 - The Pathway Question (Do I have a strategy to reach my dream?); Chapter 6 - The People Question (Have I included the people I need to realize my dream?); Chapter 7 - The Cost Question (Am I willing to pay the price for my dream?); Chapter 8 - The Tenacity Question (Am I moving closer to my dream?); Chapter 9 - The Fulfillment Question (Does working toward my dream bring satisfaction?); and, Chapter 10 - The Significance Question (Does my dream benefit others?). This book also includes a companion guide: My Dream Map.

You cannot go wrong reading this book - in fact, you will most likely gain so much insight in your hopes and dreams. This book is very thorough and well thought out. I highly recommend this book to all high school and college students. Though, anyone with a dream will certainly benefit from it.

dot.comdating by Drs. Les & Leslie Parrott

This is a nonfiction book about the reality of today's dating scene. With the immense popularity of the internet, dating has certainly changed. More and more people are using internet sites to meet and date people. This book addresses all aspects of using the internet to date.

Times of changed - a lot! A lot of people who did not grow up with the internet may find it awkward to even think about using the internet to date. This book addresses that concern and many others. This book is divided in three sections: The Six Big Myths of Online Dating; Six Ways to Know if Online Dating Is for You; and, Five Questions You Absolutely Must Ask Before Signing Up. Each Chapter is titled to be very specific to the content, making it useful to look up specific questions.

I have been skeptical of online dating, but this book is a valuable resource. Read it and follow the advice and you will most likely find internet dating extremely helpful in meeting your mate. The authors are thorough and cover what seems to be every possible mistake that someone new to internet dating may make. It is very helpful.

I like the fact that it is a little book that is short and to the point - a very fast read. I also like how Chapters are titled to be very specific to content, making it easy to find a particular topic quickly. All chapters also have the important points emphasized at the end. This is a Christian book, so it's target audience is Christians. I believe everyone can benefit from this book, though. I highly recommend it.

Max on Life by Max Lucado

This is a nonfiction book that covers a variety of questions concerning God and God's involvement in our lives. The book is literally a question and answer session divided in seven sections. Taking questions from people, the author answers popular questions with sensitivity and biblical backing. The sections of the book are:

Hope - God, Grace, and Why am I here?; Hurt - Conflicts, Calamities, and Why me?"; Help- Prayer, Scripture, and Why Church?; Him/Her- Sex, Romance, and "Any chance of a second chance?; Home- Diapers, Disagreements, and Any hope for prodigals?; Haves/Have-Nots- Work, Money, and Where's the lifeline?; and, Hereafter- Cemeteries, Heaven, Hell and Who goes where?

The author covers highly sensitive questions, such as homosexuality, making this a very enlightening book. The author uses examples from the Bible or refers to actual Scriptures to back up his answers. It may not cover your specific question, but chances are you will gain insight from answers to other questions. The author covers the entire spectrum of questions regarding God and life.

While I have not read every question and answer, I have read some controversial questions and answers, such as on homosexuality. I felt the author addressed the topic of homosexuality in a Christ-like manner. Specifically, the author stresses it is a sin that disappoints God, but we, as Christians, need to build a bridge - loving, not condoning. The author points out that there are a multitude of other sins that are more acceptable in our society, but just as disappointing to God. We should not treat homosexuals differently.

I liked the book because the author backs up his answers with biblical examples and/or Scriptures. There is also a topical index and an index to Scripture. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Not everyone may agree with all of his answers, but everyone can certainly gain insight from his explanation of his answers. The author even addresses the topic of writing your own books, from which he has also received many questions.

The Final Summit by Andy Andrews

This is a fictional novel with an important messaage. The author uses a character from a previous novel who was involved in time travel. The particular time traveler, David Ponder, is now called on a mission by the archangel Gabriel, to save civilization. David Ponder is called to a meeting that includes many other time travelers who are familiar people from the past, such as Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Joan of Arc, King David and many others.

David Ponder has five chances to find the answer, with the assistance of other time travelers, that will save civilization. Keeping the novel suspenseful, David Ponder is under a time constraint - an hour glass filled with sand. The author uses historical facts with some spectulation to develop the character of each famous person from the past. The book is engaging and you cannot help but try to guess the answer yourself. Each answer is deliberated upon making wrong answers helpful for creating a better society, too.

This is one of the best fictional books I have read. I like the fact that the author answers questions that will come to the reader at the end of the book. For example, one time traveler is far from being well known. David Ponder receives information about this time traveler, but being a fictional novel, it makes you wonder whether this time traveler's life story or even existence is true. The author answers this and other questions, including the source of information, at the end of the novel, allowing the reader to learn of historical events that are not recorded in history books. This is a must read novel!

The Fight of Our Lives by William J. Bennet & Seth Leibsohn

This is a well researched book about how America's views about radical Islam have gone from justified anger of 9/11 to a highly tolerant and even apologetic manner towards all of Islam, including radical. The book details events such as Fort Hood masacre by Nidal Hassan, who proclaimed extremist Islamic views. Despite the warning signs and complaints against Hassan, Hassan was left to continue serving in the military while spewing radical Islam. There were plenty of warning signs as the authors point out that were ignored. Why were the warning signs ignored? Politcal correctness and religious tolerance has devolved America'a justified anger toward radical Islam into appeasement in all forms of Islam.

The facts in the book are backed up with endnotes, making it authentic and something that certainly should be taken seriously by Americans. The authors are very brave and pull no punches in citing incidents of poor judgement by American leaders who are more attuned to appeasement and political correctness than the real lurking dangers. The author's research into the Fort Hood masacre set the tone for this must read book. America is in serious danger if our leaders continue to choose to ignore warning signs of radical Islam that have and can continue to errupt into terrorism and slaughter.

I liked this book becaause it demonstrates just how America's views have drastically changed over the past ten years. It is an eye opener and every American should read this book. I hope our leaders certainly read it.

The Daughter's Walk by Jane Kirkpatrick

This book is a work of historical fiction. From the historical account of Helga Etsby and her daughter, Clara's walk from Spokane, Washigton to New York City in 1896, the author delves into insightful speculation of Clara's life story. It is known that Clara became estranged from her family for some twenty years, even changing her last name. The authors takes readers through a fictional, but realistic life story that revels a nonfiction life story of Clara.

This novel is well thought and carefully researched to reflect the most probable biography of Clara. The author writes with careful and vivid detail, making Clara come to life in the novel. A very interesting look at the era when women's suffrage was in flight and a look at how some women were able to financially succeed in a man's world. The real story, in my opinion, becomes vibrant as Clara tries to reconcile with her family and eventually does.

I liked the fact the author shared how she researched and developed the most likely biography of Clara. This is the first historical fiction novel I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a must read for women of all ages. This is a Christian novel and includes discussion questions at the end of the book.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. This in no way influenced my review.

We Be Big by Rick Burgess and Bill "Bubba" Bussey

This is an autobiography about two highly successful radio personalities, who work together as a team. The book discusses how each became attracted to radio and their lives growing up in Alabama. The book is written so each takes a turn at a chapter, i.e. Rick writes about his childhood in a chapter, then Bubba writes about his childhood in the following chapter. The autobiography covers the span of their lives and how they became a team on the radio. It also includes an idea of what their radio show is like for those who have not heard them.

Overall the book was good. I think it would have been better if it went into more detail. Especially, when they comment on funny stunts that have been done on their radio show. For those who have not heard them, it's a bit of a let down since they do not go into full detail about these funny stunts, etc., leaving the reader wondering. I liked how each wrote a chapter and showed how their lives crossed at different times in their lives to the ultimate point when they became a radio team.

Another aspect of the book leaves ALL readers wondering what is actually true in this book. The subtitle states it's "The mostly true story of how two kids from Calhoun County, Alabama became Rick & Bubba". Mostly true... that leaves a lot to wonder about. On a positive note, the book is filled with bits of humor. It is also an easy read. I would most definitely recommend the book to all who actually know of Rick and Bubba and listen to their show.

This novel is smart and clever. There is an intricacy of characters that slowly reveal mysteries and keeps the book suspenseful. The more you read the harder it is to put down! Rich in complex plots and character development, this book is a must read. I highly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys fiction.

The Blessing of Adversity by Barry C. Black

This book is a scripture-based road map of how to survive life's difficult times. The book is divided into three sections: 1. Mastering the Basics, 2. Avoiding the Sources of Trouble, and 3. Turning Your Adversity into Advantage. The majority of the book focuses on the first section, Mastering the Basics. Sixteen chapters are devoted to every aspect of living your life in firm belief that God has plans for you to succeed, even through difficult times. Jesus said we'd face trials and tribulations and this book is a wonderful source of encouragment and support. The second section, Avoiding the Sources of Trouble, consists of 5 chapters that focus on how we can avoid adversity that comes through giving into temptation and sin. The third section, Turning Your Adversity into Advantage, shows a plan of resilience with two chapters that sum up the underlying premise of this book: Supersize your Faith and Build a Storm-Proof life.

One aspect of the book that could use improvement stems from the author's assumption that his readers are familiar with stories from the Bible. The author, however, provides the references to the Bible which enables the reader to use the Bible to gain a better understanding. This book could be used as a Bible study by studying the full stories of the Bible that the author uses as examples. Overall, the book is very good, but at times it seems redundant, as the author cites the same examples throughout the book.

I think everyone can certainly benefit from reading this book. Implementing the principles will most certainly deepen his/her relationship with God. I'd, however, challenge the reader to go beyond the book and study the complete stories from the Bible.

The Principle of the Path by Andy Stanley

This book isn't a self help book, but it can make your life a lot better. We've all done it. Made a bad choice and suffered the consequences. Life is really more than a series of choices, however. Each choice you make leads to a "path" and that path has a destination. The path is the basis of every part of life - relationships, finances, careers, etc. The author does an excellent job of exploring the obvious - all paths/choices have consequences and much of the time, we have the ability to make the right decisions about which paths to take. Have you ever thought to yourself? Why didn't I do it differently? Such as retirement - why didn't I save more? Or, you married someone who is not right for you. You ignored your reservations hoping it will all work out, but it doesn't.

The book is biblically based with stories and verses from the Bible. The Bible is truly a road map of human nature with wisdom to live life to the fullest. The author uses King David and King Solomon as some of the excellent examples of the Principle of the Path. Moreover, the author does not lecture, but rather takes a conversational approach to this subject. The author understands and explores other factors that cloud the decision of which path to take. The author acknowledges that it is not always easy to choose the right path and provides useful advice in an effort to help the reader learn to use tools that will give better insight of the destination of each path.

One excellent example of the depth of this book is the explanation for the verse: In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. (Prov. 3:6) In my opinion, that verse could easily be interpreted as no matter what choice you make, even when things get bad, acknowledge God and everything will work out. No, that is not what that verse means. The author provides an insightful explanation, but in short it means that when you acknowledge God, he will make the best path obvious. As the author contends, direction, not intention, determines our destination.

This is a must read for everyone in high school or college. I highly recommend it to everyone, though. I believe everyone, regardless of what stage in life they are at, will gain a lot from this book.

Scars of a Chef by Rick Tramonto with Lisa Jackson

This book is the autobiography of celebrity chef, Rick Tramonto. Tramonto takes the reader from his early childhood through his latest venture. Tramonto is transparant and honest, a real inside look of how a high school dropout was determined to succeed. This includes episodes of Tramonto's life that are not flattering - brutal honesty about his dark moods and drug use. Tramonto describes a few encounters with God, but shares his ultimate conversion that changed his life. After years of only knowing how to rely on himself, Tramonto lets go and places his trust in God.

This book isn't what I thought it was going to be about. Coming from a tough childhood and with a determination to succeed, I thought it would be inspiring and focus more on the how the author realized that God had been working in his life all along. It mostly details the author's turbulent life. I like that the ending truly demonstrates how you should really live your life and define yourself. God is to come first. No matter what - always place your trust in God. I wish there was more of that in the book, however. I didn't like the book very well, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Pujols: More Than A Game by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth

This book is a biography about baseball player, Albert Pujols. The books consists of an overview of Pujols's life story; baseball stats Pujols's charity activities and Pujols's faith in Jesus. The book is well researched citing many quotes.

The book describes Pujols success as a baseball player and his spiritual life, but it is lacking. I was under the impression that the book discussed Pujols's hardships and how his faith in God pulled him through. Disappointingly, the book simply discusses when Pujols became a Christian and cites quotes by Pujols that describe his deep faith and commitment to Jesus. The book references that Pujols had become upset with reporters because they would cut him off when he tried to talk about his faith in Jesus. This book would have been great opportunity for Pujols to express his belief and commitment to Jesus, but Pujols was not interviewed. The authors simply used quotes by Pujols and bits of interviews with those who know him to describe Pujols's faith.

The book is dry reading. Moreover, it reads like a college term paper. I was very disappointed. I would only recommend the book to die hard Pujols fans. The book would have been so much better if Pujols was interviewed or even particpated in the writing of his biography.

One Month To Live by Kerry & Chris Shook

What if you only had one month left to live? What would you do differently? How would your priorities change? While this isn't really the focus of the book, it is about learning how to change your life to live it to the fullest - within 30 days. The second title more aptly describes the book, "Thirty Days to a No-Regrets Life". The inner flap has a very descriptive phrase: Do you suffer from "Someday Syndrome"?

I wouldn't exactly call this a self-help book, but if you apply the principles, you will certainly change your life for the better. The book is all inclusive taking into account every aspect of life - from relationships to personal struggles, this book has much wisdom to offer. It is also backed up with verses from the Bible that relate to similar struggles you may face and how to live life to the fullest. For example, the writings from Paul is used to show how he handled struggles as well as the equation for a fulfilling life. Paul had much Godly wisdom when it comes to relationships and the focus of life.

The book is easy to read and the use of metaphors makes it very easy to understand and apply to your life. I read this book practically in one setting - just couldn't put it down because it has such great insight. I plan on re-reading it and following the 30 day plan to a life with no regrets. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Everyone can find useful insight to improve his or her life!

When the Hurt Runs Deep by Kay Arthur

This book was written to help those in deep pain, whether emotional or physical, to overcome their pain. A second title is descriptive as it states, "Healing and Hope for Life's Desperate Moments". Reflecting on those who faced deep pain in the Bible, as well as Bible verses, the author demostrates that it is possible to overcome deep pain. It is also a Bible Study with discussion questions for each chapter at the end of the book.

No, it may not be easy to apply the principles taught in this book, but it is well worth the effort. The book discusses some of the great stories of the Bible and the pain people went through. For example, Joseph was despised by his brothers. Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery and Joseph's life went into a downward spiral by circumstances that were not his fault. In the end, Joseph had suffered a great deal, but realized his brothers meant him harm, but God used it for good. God ultimately placed Joseph in a position to save Israeal from famine. Many other stories are explored and it would be hard for the reader not to feel a tremendous amount of hope.

I liked this book a lot. In fact, I wished it had been published YEARS ago and I had read it through some really tough times in my life. I know it would have strengthened my resolve and faith in God even more. People suffer from all kind of hurts, some very devestating, but I believe this book is worth reading and can start the healing process.

Left At The Alter by Kimberley Kennedy

This is a true story about a woman whose husband-to-be decided not to marry her vitually at the last minute. The author, Ms. Kennedy, is an Atlanta TV celebrity who gained nationwide attention from her devestating rejecction at the alter. (Being an Atlanta celebrity made it impossible to keep secret, which even worsened the emotions of rejection and embarassment she felt.) The author writes her story and her account of how she recovered from such a devestating rejection to help other women - any woman who has experienced any level of rejection. A second title within the main title, "My Story of Hope and Healing For Every Woman Who has Felt the Heartbreak of Rejection" aptly describes the book.

The author describes not only the devestation she went through, but also how she recovered through her relationship with God. The author is honest about her emotions, even blaming God instead of her fiancee, for being left at the alter. Bible verses and stories of women in the Bible complement her insight on recovery from rejection.

The book is what I would consider a light read - easy to read and containing humor. The author has practical and helpful advice for women in all stages of a relationship with a man. I like the author's writing style, which speaks to you personally.

This is a practical book and one that extends healing to all women. A must for every woman's book shelf! Rejection hurts and the author has a biblically sound way to deal with rejection AND demonstrates how you can improve your relationship with God.

While The World Watched by Carolyn Maull McKinstry with Denise George

This is a nonfiction book about growing up in the midst of the Civil Rights Era. Moreover, it's a very personal account of the injustice and violence that occurred to Blacks, as they were struggling for equal rights some one hundred years after the President Lincoln delcared them free. This is the personal account of a woman who when a child, was in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church when a bomb went off, in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963.

The author describes the sorrow and pain of being in a near death situation and losing four of her friends in the bomb that exploded in her church. The author's world was turned upside down, as her church was a place of saftety and sanctuary for her. Now, she realized there was no safe haven. The author describes how it was normal for bombs to go off in black neighborhoods, but in the church?! The author openly describes her feelings and life that changed forever after her church was bombed, in 1963.

The author describes the Jim Crow laws, the inequality between whites and blacks and the struggle for Civil Rights. Having participated in a March that was organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the author has front line experience that reveals just what it was like to be black in Birmingham, Alabama, and the entire South. The struggle for desegregation in public schools is also described. Definitley, a sad time for our country.

The author includes exerpts of speeches that describe the values taught by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as Preident John F. Kennedy's determination to change our country so that all, regardless of race, are truly equal. This book is a personal and candid exploration of the Civil Rights movement. It is not simply a historical account, which makes the book truly unique.

I highly recommend this book for everyone and I believe it should be required reading for all high school students.

Life, In Spite of Me by Kristen Jane Anderson with Tricia Goyer

An invaluable book about depression and suicide. The author details her fall into depression and her attempted suicide - a suicide that should have been successful. God had plans for the author and the author is honest about her struggle to overcome depression and the life altering injuries she suffered from her attempted suicide. The author also takes you on her personal journey of becoming a Christian and truly living her life for God.

If you are suffering from depression, this book can give you an abundance of hope. The author addresses the reader with things she wished people would have told her while she was suffering... this makes it also invaluable for those who want to help someone suffering from depression, as well.

This book is not only inspiring, but it confirms God has a plan for each of us. God truly cares of about every detail of our life! I won't give it away, but if you read this book, you will see evidence that God is present in our lives, even if we do not feel His presence. Evidence that God is watching over you every minunte of your life - God is with you! God is not some abstract God who is not apart of your life. Yes, you will find evidence of this in this book and that is so overwhelmingly comforting!

The author also provides information on the ministry God called her for - to provide support to those suffering from depression. There are people who care and want to help - no one has to go through it alone. I highly recommend this book.

Same Life, New Story by Jan Silvious

This book is about changing your life. Not a self-help book, per se, but rather a life coaching book that encourages one to put the past behind and start anew. The author uses women from the Bible as examples, as well as today's women. By using book writing - chapters, etc. as a metaphor, the reader is able to visualize how to make real life change. This is a ten week Bible study with questions of personal reflection, as well as group discussion questions.

This book is does not focus on overcoming the pain of the past, but rather ackowledges the process and encourages you to let go and move on. God is the ultimate author of your life, but you also have some control. Ultimately, you can remain complacent and stuck, or start a new "chapter" and live the life of joy that God wants for you. There is a lot of insight and new perspectives to be gained by reading this book. For exmaple:

Every life has themes (and do you have a recurring negative theme you need to change?)
Get unstuck from the belief system that can hold you up
Change your attitude, such as from I can't to I can; and, bad things happen in life, but you do not have to let them define you.
What-might-have-beens do not exist, so don't even waste your time thinking about it!
How to move on? you need to combine wisdom and courage

Honestly, I did not like the first chapter, but it gains much momentum from Chapter 2 through the last chapter. I recommend this book, but with the knowledge that it is more of a life coaching approach than providing insight on how to deal with the pain from the past in order to move on. The author glosses over the painful process of dealing with painful life circumstantces, which tends to over simplify the process of starting anew. Yet again, I do not believe it was the author's intention to take the reader through a deep, psychological process, but rather encourage readers that it is possible to change your life!

The Power Based Life by Mike Flynt

This book falls in the category of self help. It covers many ways to improve every aspect of your life. It is also based on Biblical principles, citing supporting verses from the Bible.

Dr. Phil, watch out! Mike Flynt has put together a different type of self help book - one that not only encourages, but cheers you on! The authors uses metaphors and real life examples, not only his own, but of famous people. This by far is not the typical self help book and I believe it is better! Much better.

I had a hard time putting it down. It all made so much sense and is so easy to grasp the various concepts. The author also makes it seem like a piece of cake to implement changes in your life, which is encouraging.

The chapters are:
1. Power Base: Play to your Strengths
2. Basics: Master the Essentials
3. Mindscape: Cultivate a Winning Attitude
4. Visualization: See What Can Be
5. Belief: Defy the Skeptics
6. Commitment: Move Forward Relentlessly
7. Team: Know Who You Play For
8. Identification: Fly Your Flag
9. Adversity: Turn Your Difficulties to Your Advantage
10. Compassion: Practice Radical Mercy
11. Time: Maximize Your Moments
12. Body: Sow in Health, Reap longer life

The author writes the book as if it were a Pep Rally! It can't get any more encouraging and motivating! This is by far the best self help book I have read. Anyone can benefit from this book - even if you don't think you need to make any self improvements, you will find this book highly useful and enlightening! I highly recommend it to EVERYONE!
